Last night's meeting

Having spent the last two hours writing first a wonderfully witty digest of the morning’s papers, and then an ebullient encomium of yesterday’s meeting only to see them both disappear into the ether thanks to the utter uselessness of old versions of Word and a temperamental internet connection, the euphoric aura of last night has all but vanished, replaced with seething Luddite rage.

Nevertheless, getting caught up in anger only solves problems in the minds of Americans, and thus has no place here today.

The turnout was incredible; the room was completely packed and questions were numerous enough to ensure we ran rather late. So thank you to all who turned up/got others to turn up – just how many of them were Robin Grant’s, friends remains unknown.

Thanks too to all the speakers, and Lord Lipsey, who sacrificed a night at the theatre to join us at the eleventh hour – he definitely made the right decision. And while I’m spewing platitudes onto the page, a special thank you to Billy Bragg for entertaining me on the train all the way back to Winchester – ‘twas a lovely little chat, even if we did spend too long talking about Saints’ impending doom.

For those of you who were unable to come, we had: soapbox stuff of the highest order from Polly Toynbee; Billy Bragg talking about reforming the Lords while sat between two peers; a standing ovation for the only two Conservatives present and someone agreeing with Peter Tatchell.

A vast swathe of people ventured forth from Commons to pub, and it was good to put faces to various names from across the internet/blogosphere community. Including, but not necessarily restricted to, Robin Grant, Nick Barlow, Nosemonkey, Tom Steinberg, Tim Ireland, and people from TacticalVoter, WhoShouldYouVoteFor and Backing Blair. As well as our old pals Justin and Chris Quigley. Apologies if I’ve forgotten anyone, it was a busy night.

There were quasi-comprehensive 'minutes' taken, but they are currently residing somewhere in Cambridge, or may even have been lost entirely in a comically drunken manner. Either way, they won't be round our way until at least Monday, by when I shall be jetting off to Prague for a bit, so maybe someone will post a fuller review of proceedings, but maybe not. The gist of the whole thing: get out there and do stuff. Tell your friends about it and get them to do more stuff and tell more friends. There's going to be a vigil outside Downing Street 9am-12noon on Tuesday, check website in a bit for details - we're checking things over with the police at the mo.

And lastly, send us some money - saving both Nina's job and British Democracy at the same time - a two for the price of one offer you really can't afford to pass up.
