The good the bad and the ugly of American democracy

Two articles definitely worth a read from this week's Economist. The first is about how voters in the mid-terms get to vote in a whole bunch of little referenda, on things like the level of the minimum wage or a proposal to give anyone who votes a ticket in a $1m lottery.

The second is about the problems of voting machines. First it was those damn chads, and now they've got touch-screen machines, which are rubbish compared to scanner machines, but still loads of counties have gone for the touch-screens. All part of some massive conspiracy involving Owls, Lizards and the Skull and Bones people, no doubt. And not at all because people are just a bit dumb. No.

The latter is truly shocking, as is some of the material contained in a blog it references, Avi Rubin. Read, read, read.
