Labour's targeting of swing voters backfires

As reported by Nick Robinson:

"Labour's vote seems to have fallen most heavily in its heartlands. The BBC's boffins report that in those wards where it won more than 45% of the vote last year, Labour's vote is down by five points compared with three points across the key wards as a whole. This poor performance can't be blamed on apathy. Turnout in its heartland wards is almost exactly the same as last year."

Finally it can be argued that Labour's core vote has starting waking up to the fact they have been ignored in policy, messaging and the party's resources compared to voters in marginal seats. That's the danger of fighting under FPTP - logic dictates that you speak to swing voters and middle England, not your base.
