Our thanks to Neil Harding and
Brighton Regency Labour ward for this:
A resolution on electoral reform was passed last month at Labour's Brighton Regency ward meeting and put forward to the constituency party last night. After a very passionate debate on both sides and a close vote, Brighton Pavilion Constituency Party have passed a resolution in favour of electoral reform that will be sent to David Lepper MP for his views.
The resolution passed was as follows:
"This CLP believes that the present system of election to the House of Commons is distorted because:We therefore urge the government to introduce in this parliament a more proportional system for the next general election, to ensure that everyone's vote counts"
- Elections are decided by a small number of electors in marginal constituencies.
- Governments are consistently elected by a minority of the electorate.
- Parliament does not represent the full spectrum of opinion.
In the debate it was argued that not only did Labour have a moral duty to ensure that everyone's vote was represented but also that it was in our self interest to ensure that the Tories could not rule on such a minority of the vote. If enough constituency parties can pass this sort of resolution then hopefully pressure can be put on the Labour government to honour its 1997/2001 pledge on a referendum. Even the 2005 manifesto mentions the possibility of a referendum. If you are a Labour party member propose a resolution in your ward.
